Rigor begins with required learning
A rigorous project starts with the knowledge, skills, and standards students must master. The authentic problem creates a reason to learn and apply that content; it does not replace explicit instruction or academic expectations.

The project must drive the learning
A project is not rigorous simply because students create a polished product. Students need a challenging question, sustained inquiry, purposeful reading and research, decisions that require reasoning, and repeated opportunities to use disciplinary knowledge.
Teachers make this possible by planning milestones, teaching essential content when it is needed, examining student understanding, and adjusting support without taking ownership of the work away from learners.
Assessment belongs inside the project
Strong PBL uses formative checks, drafts, conferences, critique, revision, and individual demonstrations of understanding. These practices make learning visible before the final presentation and protect academic accountability within group work.
The result is a project in which quality, reasoning, and application improve over time rather than being judged only at the end.
Professional learning should produce usable work
