Authentic Assessment That Makes Learning Visible

Start with the evidence, not the activity

Effective assessment design begins by identifying the knowledge, reasoning, skills, and standards students must demonstrate. Only then should educators choose the task, product, performance, explanation, or solution that will provide convincing evidence.

Authenticity comes from meaningful use of learning. It should deepen the intellectual demand, not distract from it.

Evaluate both process and outcome

Final products can hide differences in individual understanding. Drafts, questions, annotations, conferences, observations, reflections, short explanations, and knowledge checks show how each student is thinking throughout the work.

Rubrics should improve performance

A useful rubric focuses on the most important outcomes, describes observable differences in quality, and gives teachers and students language for feedback. Models, critique, self-assessment, and revision make the criteria part of learning rather than a scoring document used only at the end.

Teams can examine student work to identify patterns, improve curriculum, plan instruction, focus coaching, and calibrate expectations. At system level, this creates a stronger connection among curriculum, teacher development, classroom practice, and monitoring.
